Deepavali 2026
Deepavali, the festival of lights, ends the dark fortnight with rows of lamps. In 2026 it falls on Sunday, November 8, on the Ashvayuja Amavasya, with diyas at every window, muggu at the door, Lakshmi puja in the evening, and sweets to share.
When is Deepavali in 2026?
Deepavali 2026 falls on Sunday, November 8, 2026. The name means a row (avali) of lamps (deepa). It is observed on Amavasya, the new moon, at the close of Ashvayuja masa, on the darkest night, which the festival fills with light. Across India it is also known as Diwali.
The story and meaning of Deepavali
Deepavali celebrates the victory of light over darkness and knowledge over ignorance. For Telugu and South Indian families a central story is the win of Lord Krishna over the demon Narakasura, who had imprisoned thousands and terrorised the heavens; his defeat freed the captives and is remembered the morning before, on Naraka Chaturdashi. In the northern telling, Deepavali marks the return of Rama, Sita, and Lakshmana to Ayodhya after fourteen years of exile, when the people lit rows of lamps to guide them home.
The festival also honours Goddess Lakshmi, who is welcomed into clean, well-lit homes on this night, bringing prosperity and well-being for the year ahead. The cleaning, the lamps, and the open doors are all part of that welcome: a home made bright and ready for good fortune to enter.
How Telugu families observe Deepavali
The days around Deepavali have their own rhythm:
- Naraka Chaturdashi, the day before, begins with an early oil bath at dawn and marks Krishna's victory over Narakasura.
- On Deepavali, the home is cleaned and lit with rows of diyas and lamps, doorways carry fresh muggu, and the family wears new clothes.
- In the evening comes the Lakshmi puja, followed by sweets and by crackers and sparklers that the children love.
It is a festival of homecoming and generosity, of visiting family, sharing plates of sweets with neighbours, and lighting the way for the year to come.
The foods of Deepavali
Deepavali is a festival of sweets and savouries made in plenty to share. Telugu kitchens turn out ariselu (rice flour and jaggery), boondi and laddu, jangri or jilebi, and crisp savouries such as chakralu and murukulu. Much of the cooking happens in the days before, and plates of these are carried to neighbours and offered to every visitor, so the food is as much about giving as about eating.
Celebrating Deepavali in the US
Deepavali has become one of the most visible Indian festivals in the US, with temple programs, association galas, fireworks events, and growing school and civic recognition of the holiday. Telugu families light diyas and string lights at home, draw muggu, keep the Lakshmi puja in the evening, and share sweets, often gathering friends for the night. For children, the lamps, the new clothes, and the boxes of sweets make it one of the easiest festivals to love and to remember.
Because Deepavali turns on the Amavasya tithi and the evening Lakshmi puja, the observed date can land a day off from India. The tithi begins and ends at the same instant worldwide, but the evening window and local sunrise fall at different clock times in each city. Sampangi computes the date for the place where you celebrate, so your Deepavali, and your family's Telugu birthdays, fall on the right day for where you live.
